Gunnison Basin Pulic Lands - Central Colorado
The Gunnison Basin Public Lands lie just to the west of the San Isabel National Forest area. Many of the backroads in the area are opened and closed on a seasonal basis due to weather conditions, snow runoff levels and wildlife patterns.
One of the most famous scenic routes in the area is the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway. It offers prepared off-roaders with the opportunity to traverse some of the highest passes in the country all while taking in views of some of the biggest mountains the state has to offer. The area's mining history is on display all along the route.
A number of wilderness areas have stricter management in order to maintain the region's legacy. Travel in these areas is restricted to existing roads.
